What is the difference between interpretation and translation ?
The term “translation” refers to the activity of the translator, who transposes a written text from one language into another. (in written form)
The term “interpretation” refers to the interpreter, who transposes the spoken words of an orator from one language into another. (orally)
In both cases, it is important to maintain faithfulness to the original message.
What are the different forms of interpretation that exist ?
Several forms of interpretation exist. The most common and frequently-used forms are defined as follows :
—- Simultaneous
Simultaneous interpretation is the type of interpretation that we most often find in conferences, seminars, colloquiums, important meetings, high-level trainings, etc. The interpreters listen to the interventions of different orators, all the while “translating orally and instantly” in a microphone linked to headphones worn by participants.
These conference interpreters sit in an interpretation booth in order to concentrate, as well as to not disturb the orator or the other participants.
These interpreters work in pairs or in larger group and take turns of 15 to 30 minutes each.
—- Consecutive
Consecutive interpretation consist of listening to an orator and then rendering his/her message into another language.
Consecutive interpretation can be carried-out by one or more interpreters.
—- Whisper Interpretation (“Chuchotage)
Whisper interpretation (“Chuchotage”) is a variation of simultaneous interpretation. Often used in business meetings. The interpreter follows the different interventions in the room and whispers the “translation” into the ear of the delegate.
This form of interpretation can be carried out with low-cost wireless equipment or without any equipment depending on the number of persons and a number of other factors.

Escort interpretation (liaison interpretation) is when an interpreter literally follows the client (whether it be one person or a group) allow said client to communicate with all those speaking in another language in particular. (understand what is being said and to express themselves freely)

What is meant by Terms of References (or “TORs”) ?
The “TORs” or “Terms of Reference” is a term used by interpreters to describe the documents that will allow them to prepare themselves before any intervention.
Documents such as : The programme /agenda, PowerPoint presentations, list of participants with their job titles, internet link to relevant sites, minutes of past meetings, any speeches eventually ready (draft version and major outlines of speech are acceptable) … and any other documents that will allow the interpreters to better prepare for the services to be rendered.
The content of our event is confidential. Is it mandatory to send documents before the event ?
No, it is preferable but not at all mandatory to send documents to interpreters before the event.
We work with seasoned interpreters who can interpret at an acceptable level in common themes without minimum preparation.
However, for all practical purposes, it is important to note that these interpreters will finish by having knowledge of this information said to be confidential. It’s for this very reason that it is preferable that a confidentiality agreement be signed (whether it be with these interpreters or with SuperLingua) to avoid any leaks.
Based on this, we suggest that the confidentiality agreements be signed well before the event so that our interpreters can have access to the documents necessary to better prepare and therefore improve the level of quality of the performance.
Why is it important to send the Terms of Reference in a timely manner ?
We work with professional interpreters that prepare for their events.
Institutions and companies have and often use in-house jargon in the form of terms, acronyms and abbreviation that are specific to them. Sending a 200 presentation on the eve of your event is not ideal for a good performance.
Ideally, it is good for the interpreter to receive the basic documents at least two (2) weeks before the event.
We understand very well that the final versions of most documents will only become available in the hours before the event
What are the determining factors for the quotation received for interpretation services ?
The number of participants, complexity of the theme (subject matter), the number of das and the number of hours per day, the venue (in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire or outside of Abidjan), the frequency of calls upon our service by client, the equipment that will be supplied (cordless mics and table mics are part of our basic services, while lavalier microphones [a.k.a lapel mics] attract additional fees)
